Aaron Bergsman, M.D.

A native of Arizona, Aaron Bergsman M.D., graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduation, he broadened his horizons by moving to Australia to complete his medical school education at the University Of Queensland School Of Medicine in Brisbane, Australia.

Upon returning to the United States, Dr. Bergsman started his residency at the esteemed Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD and finished his surgical residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, where he was awarded the residency achievement award. The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons gives this award to residents that show excellence in laparoscopic, endoscopic, and minimally invasive surgery. It is one of the only nationally recognized awards given to a graduating chief resident who commends their operative skills as a surgeon.

Dr. Bergsman is Board Certified with the American College of Surgeons. He provides the full range of general surgical care, including treatment of which includes laparoscopic approaches where appropriate:

Dr. Bhasin came to Charlotte in 2005 after he completed his residency and fellowship at the University of South Carolina. His interest in the field of surgery began at a young age, following in the foot steps of his father.

During his surgical training at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Bhasin became interested in caring for critically ill surgical patients. He went on to pilot the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship introduced by the University of South Carolina in 2003, and was the first graduate of this program.

Dr. Bhasin is Board Certified in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Bhasin enjoys a diversity of clinical practice. His special interest in the critically ill surgical patient comes from a passion for all aspects of general surgery. He has benefited from multidisciplinary training and provides the full range of general surgical care, including treatment of which includes laparoscopic approaches where appropriate.

Bryan D. Blitstein, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Bryan D. Blitstein, a native to the Midwest, attended school at the University of Missouri, Kansas-City. There he completed both his undergraduate training and medical school in six years. He then traveled to Chicago for his General Surgical training at the Loyola University Medical Center. There he was awarded a scholarship for excellence to undergo additional training in Minimally Invasive, or Laparoscopic, Surgery. Dr. Blitstein came to Charlotte in 1997.

Dr. Blitstein is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He is an accomplished pianist in classical, jazz, and blues and has been playing since the age of eight. He enjoys spending time with his family.

Dr. J. Andrew Bohn, a native of Oxford, Ohio received his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. He completed his internship, residency, and chief residency in General Surgery at the Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Bohn is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Hernia Society.

Dr. Burgess graduated from Myers Park High School and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, earning a varsity basketball scholarship his senior year under Coach Dean Smith. He received both his Bachelor's Degree in Biology and Medical Degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. He completed his Internship and Residency at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. Finally, he completed a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Burgess has been practicing Vascular Surgery in Charlotte since 2002.

Dr. Burgess is board certified in Vascular Surgery.

His Vascular fellowship has gained him special expertise in both Open and Endovascular Surgery (minimally invasive vascular surgery) which can help treat all arterial and venous diseases, including varicose veins and venous reflux. He also is a Registered Vascular Technologist, specializing in the noninvasive diagnostic work up of patients with Ultrasound technology.

Dr. Burgess serves as the Medical Director of the ICAVL accredited vascular lab at SSC. Dr. Burgess also specializes in vein care and the minimally invasive treatment of venous disease at the Vein Care Center of SSC.

Dr. Burgess is a speaker and educator for VNUS Medical Technologies, where he teaches other physicians about venous disease and radiofrequency ablation techniques.

Dr. Burgess operates in both CMC and Presbyterian hospitals.

Dr. Charles F. “Chuck” Collin is a native of Luray, Virginia. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in chemistry. He received his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine and completed an Internship in surgery at the University of Virginia Hospital.

After two years as a general medical officer in the U.S. Army, Dr. Collin completed his general surgery training at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia. He then served a two-year fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Dr. Collin is Board Certified in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology.

Michael W. Dobson, D.O., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Michael W. Dobson came to Charlotte in July 2007. After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia, Dr. Dobson attended medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Dobson completed his General Surgery training at New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he received several awards including The Maxwell Award for excellence in surgery. Dr. Dobson then went on for further specialized surgical training in the field of Colon and Rectal Surgery at The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. There, he was honored with the award for the most outstanding colorectal surgical fellow. Dr. Dobson is currently the director of the Colorectal Surgery Center at Surgical Specialists of Charlotte.

Dr. Dobson specializes in colon and rectal surgery. He performs advanced laparoscopic surgery for benign and malignant colorectal disease. He has a special interest in the surgical treatment of colon and rectal cancers, as well as inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Dr. Dobson employs the latest techniques in minimally invasive surgery to help care for his patients. He performs numerous colonoscopies to identify and treat colon polyps. Dr. Dobson provides both office-based and surgical treatment for anorectal diseases, such as hemorrhoids. In addition to colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Dobson also enjoys caring for a wide variety of general surgery conditions such as hernias and gallbladder disease.

E. Craig Evans, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Craig Evans is a native of South Carolina and a graduate of the College of Pharmacy, University of South Carolina. After one year of practice as a hospital pharmacist, he entered the Medical University of South Carolina, obtaining his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1974.

Dr. Evans was privileged to complete his surgical training at the Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia, serving as chief resident of general surgery in 1979. From 1979 to 1988, Dr. Evans practiced in Spartanburg, South Carolina and was elected president of the Spartanburg County Medical Society in 1986. In 1989, he moved his family to Charlotte and continues to practice general, laparoscopic and oncologic surgery at all of the hospitals in the city.

Dr. Evans is Board Certified.

He has a special interest in breast cancer treatment and serves as co-director of the Breast Health Services at Presbyterian Hospital Cancer Center. He has also served as chairman of the Department of General Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital.

Alejandro Fernandez-Tatum, M.D.

Dr. Fernandez-Tatum is originally from Madrid, Spain and graduated from the American School of Madrid before moving to North Carolina to attend Davidson College, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Concentrations in Chemistry and Medical Humanities. He received his Medical Degree at UNC-Chapel Hill. He completed his Internship and Residency in General Surgery and Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC and is currently Board Certified.

His Vascular Fellowship has gained him extensive expertise in both Open and Endovascular Surgery, allowing him to treat all arterial and venous diseases, including abdominal aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, dialysis access, and varicose veins and reflux.

As a native Spanish speaker and certified interpreter, he has a special interest in providing surgical services to the Hispanic community.

Dr. Fernandez-Tatum operates at both CMC and Presbyterian hospitals.

Henry A. Fleishman, M.D., F.A.C.S

College: Washington and Lee University

Medical School: Emory University

Surgical Residency: University of Kentucky

Dr. Fleishman was born in Anderson, South Carolina. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Washington and Lee University and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Medical Degree with honors (Alpha Omega Alpha and Cum Laude) from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 1974. He completed his General Surgery training at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.

After completing his surgical training in 1979, Dr. Fleishman and his wife, Virginia, moved to Eden, North Carolina. He was the founding partner of Piedmont Surgical Specialists. At Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, North Carolina he has been President of the Medical Staff, and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. He was instrumental in developing the Smith-McMichael Cancer Center which is certified by the Commission on Cancer. He has been the only chairman of the Cancer Committee and the hospital's only Cancer Liaison Physician.

Dr. Fleishman is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

During the 31 years Dr. Fleishman resided in Eden he was very active in civic affairs including the Eden Chamber of Commerce, Carlisle School Board, the United Way Board, and several Bank Boards. In the summer of 2010 Dr. Fleishman and his wife Virginia, his wife of 37 years, decided to move to Charlotte, North Carolina to be closer to their three children and grandchildren. They feel very fortunate that Dr. Fleishman was able to join the prestigious Surgical Specialists of Charlotte.

Sandra P. Giller, M.D., F.A.C.S.

College: Cameron University

Medical School: University of Oklahoma School of Medicine

Surgical Residency: University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center

A native of Munich, Germany, Dr. Giller attended The University of Oklahoma Medical School. She completed her surgical training at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center with strong emphasis on Trauma and Critical Care. After residency, Dr. Giller practiced at a 900+ bed hospital where she provided a wide range of surgical services, urgent and elective, laparoscopic and conventional.

Winston Y. Godwin, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Godwin is a native South Carolinian. He graduated from The Citadel with a B.S. in Biology. He then graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina with his Medical Degree and completed his general surgery residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Godwin then practiced in his hometown of Cheraw, South Carolina for two years before moving to Charlotte.

Dr. Godwin is board certified with the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, North Carolina Surgical Society, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the American Hernia Society. He currently serves as Chair of the Department of General Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews.

Charles A Hill III, M.D.

Dr. Hill, a native of North Carolina, is an honors graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his Medical Degree from Wake Forest University. He remained at Wake Forest for his internship in general surgery before completing his general surgery residency at Carolinas Medical Center. Dr. Hill then traveled to Texas for his fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital.

Dr. Hill is Board Certified by The American Board of Surgery. He is an expert in the management of foregut disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus and achalasia. Dr. Hill provides a full range of general surgery care including gallbladder, colon and small bowel, as well as all types of hernias. His advanced training allows him to employ the least invasive therapeutic techniques whenever possible, including laparoscopic, robotic and endoscopic approaches.

Dr. Hill sees patients at our Pineville location and welcomes all new patients to his practice.

Dr. McElwee is currently serving as Vice-President of Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, PA

Dr. Thomas McElwee was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina and educated at local schools. He went to UNC Chapel Hill where he majored in English and Chemistry and graduated from Tulane Medical School in 1980. His training in General and Vascular Surgery was done at Baptist Hospital affiliated with Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem.

Dr. McElwee provides the full range of general surgical care, including treatment of which includes laparoscopic approaches where appropriate in:

Dr. McElwee was a clinical instructor at East Carolina University for one year before joining the group in 1986 and he was able to practice with his father, Ross McElwee for two years.

Dr. McElwee is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the North Carolina Surgical Association, and the Charlotte Surgical Society. He was recently elected President of the Southern Society of Clinical Surgeons for 2009.

Dr. Phuong H. Nguyen is joining the Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, PA, following his work as a Fellow in the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Indiana University’s School of Medicine in Indianapolis.

A native Vietnamese speaker and fluent in English, Dr. Nguyen has gained valuable surgical experience working in medical facilities around the globe. After earning his Bachelors of Science with honors in Microbiology and Cell Science from the University of Florida, Dr. Nguyen continued his medical education at Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, Florida, participating with the university on several medical missions to Central America.

After completing a year internship in the Department of General Surgery at the Shands Health Science Center in Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. Nguyen started his residency as a Categorical Resident in the Department of General Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. During his five-year residency, he gained the Recognition of Achievement In Surgical Research award as a Research Resident in the Division of GI and Minimally Invasive Surgery, spent a year performing surgeries with the Department of Surgical Oncology in San Jose, Costa Rica, and later was awarded Resident Teacher of the Year while acting as the Chief Resident in the department of General Surgery. He is a Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellow: Indiana University School Of Medicine.

Dr. Nguyen is an active member in the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Society of American GastroIntestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, as well as the Indiana State Medical Association.

Dr. Paul J. Orland, a native of Merrick, New York, attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester New York. He completed his general surgery training at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and then served a fellowship in vascular surgery at Saint Louis University Hospital.

Dr. Orland's surgical interests include:

Dr. Pederson has practiced in Charlotte since 2003. A native of Oklahoma, Dr. Pederson completed his surgical residency at the University of Alabama. Dr. Pederson cultivated his interest in surgical cancer care, by pursuing a research fellowship in the Departments of Surgery, Radiation Biology, and Gene Therapy. He went on to complete an SSO accredited clinical and research cancer surgery fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Pederson is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is a member of numerous national medical societies including: The American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, The Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), The American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Pederson practices general surgery and has advanced Fellowship training in cancer surgery and endocrine surgery. He has expertise in Surgical Endocrinology (Benign and malignant disorders of the pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands), Gastrointestinal cancer (including liver, biliary, pancreas, large and small bowel malignancies), skin and soft tissues tumors (including sarcoma, and breast cancer, and melanoma).

After completing his undergraduate and medical school education in his home state of Missouri, Dr. Thies traveled to Virginia for his surgical residency. He then moved to Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1997 where he practiced the full breadth of general surgery for ten years. While there, he introduced a variety of minimally invasive procedures to the community, including laparoscopic colon resection, laparoscopic gastric bypass, and laparoscopic hernia repairs, as well as sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast and skin cancers. In addition, he served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery, as the Medical Director of the Surgical Weight Loss Program, and as a member of the hospital's Board of Directors.

Dr. Vaughn was the co-founder of Dilworth Surgical Specialists and has practiced in Charlotte since completing his Surgical Residency at Georgetown in 1981. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Dr. Vaughn is past President of the Medical Staff at Carolinas Medical Center and has served as Chief of the Department of Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center and Mercy Hospital. He is past-president of the Charlotte Surgical Society, and has served in various hospital positions including the Chair of Surgery at CMC-Pineville and the Executive Committee at CMC-Pineville. Dr. Zbinden is a past President of Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, P.A. and was formerly Vice-President.

He graduated Cum Laude from Davidson College and received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He returned to North Carolina in 1990 and completed his general surgery internship and residency here in Charlotte at Carolinas Medical Center.

Dr. Zbinden has served as chairman of the departments of surgery at CMC-Mercy and CMC-Pineville. He is past-president of the medical staff of CMC-Pineville.
