Surgical Specialists of Charlotte Adopts Advanced Technology to Improve the Surgical Experience for Breast Cancer Patients

Surgical Specialists of Charlotte surgeon among first in the greater Charlotte area to use the SAVI SCOUT radar localization system

Charlotte, NC [April, 2017] - Surgical Specialists of Charlotte continues to demonstrate its commitment to offering the most advanced treatment options to patients with breast cancer by becoming one of the first practices in the greater Charlotte area to use the new SAVI SCOUT® radar localization system during breast conservation surgeries. An alternative to wire localization, SCOUT® is an FDA-cleared device, used by surgeons and radiologists to precisely locate and direct the removal of a tumor during a lumpectomy or surgical biopsy procedure.

“Breast cancer surgery can be physically and emotionally distressing for women, and we strive to find ways to create a better experience - and better outcomes - for our patients,” says Dr. Carolyn Menendez, MD FACS.

SCOUT Works with Precision Accuracy in Lumpectomy and Excisional Biopsy

SCOUT uses non-radioactive, radar technology to provide real-time surgical guidance during breast surgery. Rather than placing a wire immediately before surgery, a SCOUT reflector - the size of a grain of rice - is placed in the target tissue up to 30 days prior to surgery. During surgery, the SCOUT guide accurately detects the location of the reflector, and the tumor.

The ability to precisely locate and direct the removal of a tumor during a lumpectomy or surgical biopsy procedure enables surgeons to increase the probability of complete cancer removal and reduce the likelihood of needing follow-up surgeries - a huge advantage for early-stage breast cancer patients. In addition, the ability to strategically plan the incision may result in less tissue being removed during surgery, resulting in better cosmetic outcomes.

Improving the Surgical Experience

For many women, the traditional method of inserting a wire into the breast on the day of surgery leads to discomfort, increased anxiety, and overall reduced satisfaction. There is also a risk that the wire could become dislodged in the time period between placement and surgical removal, often several hours later, resulting in more difficult surgery and increased possibility re-excisions. With SCOUT, a woman does not have to arrive as early on the day of surgery because the localization is completed prior to the surgery date. As a result, this may reduce long wait times for patients and their families.

According to Dr. Menendez, ”The use of the SCOUT has been very well received by the entire care team as well as the patients, creating a more stream-lined day of surgery and overall improved experience.”

As research and technology continue to advance, Surgical Specialists of Charlotte remains committed to adopting the safest and most progressive treatment options available for patients with breast cancer.

Surgical Specialists of Charlotte is pleased to introduce Carolyn Menendez, M.D.

Surgical Specialists of Charlotte is pleased to introduce Carolyn Menendez, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board certified surgeon and fellow of the American College of Surgeons, who will focus exclusively on caring for patients with benign and malignant breast disease. Her knowledge and skill in treating all forms of breast cancer are a welcome addition to the comprehensive breast program at Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, which will allow us to better serve our patients and their families.

Specializing in breast cancer treatment, Dr. Menendez has extensive expertise in the latest care and prevention of breast cancer including genetic testing. She is a member of a prestigious national network of physicians who have pursued advanced training in cancer risk assessment and genetic testing through the California-based City of Hope Cancer Genetics Program.

Dr. Menendez brings this valuable knowledge to our patients at Surgical Specialists of Charlotte. We are now able to offer the latest information, education and support to help guide breast cancer patients and their families in making the best decision regarding their genetic risk factors and appropriate treatment measures.

She believes that breast cancer requires an integrated multi-disciplinary approach with all specialties working in conjunction with one another to coordinate care - from the surgeon to the medical oncologist; from radiation oncologist to social worker; from dietitian to family navigator, it takes an entire team of cancer specialists to give the patient the most comprehensive care.

A native of California, Dr. Menendez received her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed a residency at the University of California, San Francisco, at Fresno. Dr. Menendez was a general surgeon prior to dedicating her practice exclusively to benign and malignant breast disease, including breast biopsy, breast tumor surgery, cancer genetic counseling, risk-reducing surgery and oncoplastic surgery (maximizing the cosmetic result while adhering to oncologic principles).

Dr. Menendez enjoys swimming, biking, hiking and spending time with her family. She and her husband Raul have two daughters, Lauren and Evangeline, two dogs and two cats.

In addition to joining the staff at Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, Dr. Menendez will serve as Medical Director of the clinical cancer genetics program at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center at Charlotte.

Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, P.A. provides exceptional patient care with new EMR system.

Posted on November 20, 2014

Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, P.A. has recently partnered with NextGen Healthcare, one of the largest EMR (Electronic Medical Records) vendors in the United States, to successfully transition to a new, state-of-the-art electronic medical records system. The decision to implement a new EMR system was based primarily on the practice’s desire to provide the best possible care for our patients. Our EMR system helps to ensure better care by allowing our patients secure access to their health record via our Patient Portal.

Our EMR implementation has also allowed for us to capture required quality and Meaningful Use data. In September, we successfully completed our 90-day reporting period for Stage 1, Year 1 Meaningful Use, and we are now preparing for our full-year reporting period for Stage 1, year 2 beginning January 1, 2015.

Technology will continue to position our practice for future growth. We look forward to integrating our EMR system with hospital systems and other platforms, such as Health Information Exchanges. This integration will aid in our goal to provide the best possible care for our patients, as our providers will be able to improve coordination by accessing records from providers outside our immediate networks.

Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, P.A | Matthews Increasing Their Space, Staff and Technology

Posted on January 31, 2012

The team of surgeons at Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, P.A. has announced the grand opening of their new office space in Matthews. Through their commitment to world-class surgical procedures and excellent patient care, the practice was outgrowing its existing space yet wanted to stay close to their Matthews patients. A viable solution arose when a significant space became available one floor below their existing facility in the Presbyterian Medical Office Building. Surgical Specialists of Charlotte acquired this space, suite 250, and began a complete renovation. The new Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, P.A. Matthews offices open to the public on Monday, February 6, 2012.

The new facility nearly doubles the space available in our Matthews office. This, coupled with a renovated patient waiting area and updated examination rooms, allows for a more comfortable experience for their patients. The waiting area is intentionally designed to bring a calming affect to patients who often face anxiety regarding their surgeries. In addition, the Matthews center includes increased diagnostic imaging capabilities, allowing the Surgical Specialists of Charlotte surgeons to conduct a broader array of ultrasound studies. This allows physicians to have greater insight into a patient's condition before surgery, reducing the potential of unanticipated challenges.

This larger space also allows for an increase in physician availability for all of the surgeons based in the Matthews location. Drs. J. Andrew "Andy" Bohn, M.D., F.A.C.S., Winston Y. Godwin, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S., Paul J. Orland, M.D., F.A.C.S. and Eric L. Wallace, M.D., F.A.C.S. will offer additional appointment times in the expanded location. The primary surgical services offered at this location include abdominal wall repairs (Hernias), diseases of the breast, Cancer surgery, Thyroid, Gallbladder, Gastrointestinal tract, and Vascular surgery.

Louis H. Zbinden III, M.D., F.A.C.S., President of Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, P.A. states, "We are excited about the opportunity to better serve our Matthews patients with this increase in space, availability and diagnostic technology. Surgical Specialists of Charlotte is always striving to be at the forefront of surgical treatment and patient care. Our new Matthews office allows us to do this more effectively and more comfortably for our patients."

The relocation of the Matthews office along with upcoming renovations to their Randolph Road office and Huntersville location reveals the Surgical Specialists of Charlotte's commitment to providing their patients with the highest standards of patient care.
